Srinagar, May 04 (KNO): With energy, focus and fierce competition on display, young athletes from across the country are making their mark at the ongoing Inter-University Wushu Championship in Srinagar, showcasing not just skill but the spirit of discipline and sportsmanship, which kickstarted on Monday. At the University of Kashmir, where the championship is being held, participants told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that such platforms are crucial in shaping careers and building confidence among youth. “Playing at this level gives us exposure and motivation to improve,” said a participant from the University of Kashmir. “It is not just about winning, but it is about learning, competing and growing as an athlete.” A participant from Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) said the event brings together talent from across the country, creating a competitive yet inspiring environment. “You get to learn from others, understand different techniques and push your limits,” the athlete said. Khushbu from Kurukshetra University said the championship is a valuable experience for young players. “Events like these build confidence and help us perform under pressure. They prepare us for bigger stages,” she said. Juji, another participant from Rajasthan, said sports play a key role in shaping personality. “Sports teach discipline, focus and resilience. These are lessons that stay with you for life,” she said. National Wushu Team Coach Kuldeep Handoo, a Dronacharya Awardee, said such championships are vital for nurturing talent. “This is where future champions are identified. Consistent competition at this level helps athletes grow and excel,” he said. While athletes remained focused on performance, some also spoke about the importance of staying on the right path. “Youth should stay engaged in sports and positive activities,” one athlete said, adding briefly, “drugs only harm careers and lives.” Importantly, the championship, featuring participants from over 150 universities and more than 1,000 athletes, continues to witness intense bouts and enthusiastic participation, which was thrown open today by LG Manoj Sinha, reflecting the growing popularity of Wushu among young sportspersons—(KNO)
